As we have seen though, this was perhaps the lull before the new storm of rising coronavirus cases and hospital admissions. The daily average of admissions has now risen to over 500, and whilst this is nowhere near the peak we saw in April/May, it is showing a worrying trend1. As the Government’s Chief Medical Officer, Chris Whitty, pointed out;

We’re now going into the seasons late autumn and winter which benefit respiratory viruses, and it is very likely they will benefit Covid as they do for example flu. 2
